Greek Language Proficiency (Ellinomatheia)
HSK – Native language and culture
Intoduction
The main goal of the Departments of Greek Language and Culture (TEG) is the teaching of the Greek language and Greek culture to young Greeks. And a criterion for achieving this goal is the participation of TEG students in the Greek Language Proficiency exams. Therefore, we invite parents to learn more about Greek Language Proficiency and to encourage their children to participate in these exams.
Organisation
The Centre for Greek Language, an organization supervised by the Ministry of Education of Greece, is responsible for the examinations and the subsequent certification. In Switzerland the responsible body for conducting the Greek language proficiency exams is the Zurich Examination Centre, which has been operating since 2010 with the approval of the Centre for the Greek Language.
What does the Greek language certification offer
-
It gives the Greek language user the opportunity to have the opinion of another more specialized and objective evaluator regarding the level of their knowledge and skills.
-
It demonstrates the level of proficiency of the holder's Greek language skills in the job market.
-
It provides a type of certificate with the “familiar” levels that we also encounter in other languages (e.g., A2, B1, etc.)
Exam levels
The exams assess oral and written proficiency and are divided into six levels of increasing difficulty.
- A1 (children/adolescents) Elementary knowledge
- A2 Basic knowledge
- B1 Intermediate knowledge
- B2 Good knowledge
- C1 Very good knowledge
- C2 Excellent knowledge
A detailed description of the individual levels and their language requirements can be found here.
Greek language proficiency: Practical information
-
The exams take place every year, mainly in May. Registrations must usually be made by the end of February. The results are announced electronically in the summer, and shortly afterwards the students receive a certificate by mail.
-
In order to take the exams, a fee must be paid in addition to the online registration.
-
The teachers of the HSK courses for Greek language and culture (T.E.G.) ask parents to let them know in advance whether their child is interested in participating and at what level, in order to support the preparation of each individual student.

-
The teachers of the Departments of Greek Language and Culture (TEG) ask parents in a timely manner to indicate whether they are interested in their child participating and at which level, in order to assist in the preparation of each student.
